Super Mario ISN'T Italian - He's Japanese
Mario's evolution through the decades has caused many to question his background, but one source confirms he's not Italian. Mario is Japanese.
Given his longevity, it's easy for fans to believe they know everything about Mario, gaming's most iconic plumber. Since his first appearance in 1985's Super Mario Bros., the character has forged a uniquely significant and prominent position as a video game protagonist. In spite of that, comments made by one of Nintendo's most fabled designers cast doubt on if Mario is Italian.
