In popular consciousness, there's one game that really defines console JRPGs: Final Fantasy VII. First released in 1997 for the original PlayStation, the seventh Final Fantasy game focused on the conflict between the anime swordsman who would define a generation of brooding heroes, Cloud Strife, and the one-winged angel whose hair length is only outmatched by that of his sword, Sephiroth.
