Sega's Secret Moneymaker Released 28 Video Games in the Last 2 Decades

Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's golden boy, but the Puyo Puyo series is even older than him...and makes almost as much money!

Sega's Secret Moneymaker Released 28 Video Games in the Last 2 Decades

Sega's known for Sonic the Hedgehog, but even with the hedgehog's up-and-down-and-all-around reception, the company is still going strong with other properties as well. Yakuza is a bigger hit in the West now than it's ever been, and ever since Sega bought Atlus in 2013, they've been able to add some JRPG juggernauts to their catalog. There's another, lesser-known franchise, though, that's a class of its own in popularity back in Japan: Puyo Puyo. Starring Arle Nadja and her faithful pet Carbuncle, the Puyo Puyo games were goofy, character-heavy puzzle spinoffs of Compile's Madou Monogatari first-person RPG series. While the RPGs didn't make much of an impact, Puyo Puyo is second only to Tetris in terms of genre-defining puzzle games.
